Councilors debated promotional and parade spending and ultimately moved to remove a proposed $12,800 float rental from the council budget.
“So I think we have a consensus that renting a float for $12,800 is not good,” Mayor Walker said as several councilors agreed rental was excessive given the broader call to trim budgets.
Members discussed alternatives — riding the city’s historic 1912 fire truck, walking in parades, or creating a simple trailer float — and asked staff to develop a clear policy differentiating city-organized events (city runs the event) from city-sponsored events (city provides in-kind or monetary support). Council also discussed moving recurring items such as the coat and backpack giveaways to the events manager’s operational budget and seeking private sponsorships for larger events to avoid direct taxpayer outlays.
Council asked staff to return a short memo defining sponsorship packages and what in-kind services (barricades, security, cleanup) the city will provide when it agrees to sponsor an event.
