Board sets open-enrollment space limits for special education categories

The board on Jan. 13 approved space-available limits for accepting open-enrollment students with special education needs. The board motion set specific caps: EC/4K speech & language — 3 seats; K–12 speech & language — 26 seats; EC/4K (two classrooms) — 3 seats; K–6 cross-categorical special education — 14 seats; 7–12 cross-categorical special education — 15 seats.
The motion (moved by Dennis Kuehn and seconded by Erica Bender) also authorized the district to consider additional criteria when determining space availability for a non-resident student's IEP, including class size limits, staffing capacity (types and minutes of services), projected enrollment changes, and the intensity of pupil needs. The board approved the motion by voice vote.
