Students pitch business solutions through Teamship program; sheriff's office explores internship ties

Dr. Pierce told the board that 20 students from four high schools participated in the Teamship summer program, working with three local business partners (the county sheriff's office, the Hampton Inn of Kinston, and the Kinston Community Council for the Arts) to develop practical solutions for each partner.
Students presented prototypes and business pitches at a final event. A coach described how teams produced tangible prototypes to hand to partners: "All of the all 6 teams and all of the kids sitting here, they each created prototypes that they could actually hand to their business partners," said a coach who participated in the program. One business partner told the presenters that the sheriff's office was interested in developing an internship based on student work.
The district said the program is funded by a community partnership grant and the 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant, and that plans are underway to run Teamship again in July 2027. Board members praised the reciprocal learning between students and local employers and noted the program's role in exposing students to workforce pathways.
