Commissioners postpone four citizen-initiated zoning districts for legal review

Madison County Attorney Colton Lauer told the Board of Commissioners that several legal matters have arisen related to four citizen-initiated zoning districts (Bighorn Crossing, Antelope Basin, Sheep Mountain, Pronghorn Meadows). Lauer said the county is coordinating with the Montana Association of Counties (MACo) and asked for a two-week postponement to ensure comprehensive review.
Following Lauer's statement, Commissioner William A. Todd moved to continue the zoning-district items and related resolutions of intent until the board's August 4, 2026 meeting; Commissioner Duke W. Gilman seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Multiple related agenda items (including setting hearing dates and resolutions of intent) were continued together to allow legal review and coordination with MACo.
