Germantown reports sharp drop in special-education aide vacancies, staff say

District administrators reported a notable decrease in special-education aide vacancies during the Germantown School District personnel committee meeting on Aug. 4, saying current openings are far lower than a year ago. Director Anne Utech told the committee there are three current vacancies — two at Mac and one at County Line — and that the district has recently hired several positions across professional technical roles.

Utech contrasted this year’s staffing picture with last year, saying the district was working on or had 18 special-education assistant positions at the same point last year and that the number has fallen dramatically: "Now we're down to 4, so that's a reduction of about 77%." She said the district has focused on improving onboarding and building-level supervision to reduce turnover, and committed to bringing the onboarding process to a future committee meeting for review.

Board President Russ Ewart praised the efforts, telling the committee the narrower turnover reflects improvements at the building supervision level. The district did note a small inconsistency in how current vacancies were described during the presentation (three in one passage, 'down to 4' elsewhere); the administration attributed that to how open positions and newly filled roles were tallied during the staff report and said it will clarify the exact live vacancy count in written materials.
