District targets writing precision after PSAT findings; names tools and benchmarks

Margaret (ELA presenter) told the board that PSAT results show strong reading performance but identified specific writing needs in precision and sentence-level conventions. "We're looking at precision, clarity, and control in how students write," Adrianne (ELA presenter) said, explaining that NoRedInk will be used to diagnose grammar needs while CommonLit will support "writing about reading" practice.
Margaret described repeated benchmark writing assessments (fall and spring) and said combining PSAT data with local writing benchmarks and diagnostics will allow teachers to diagnose grammar rules and expression issues at the student level. The district said Patterns of Power has been adopted down to third grade and will be considered across grades to support consistent writing instruction, with teacher PD and coaching planned for summer and fall.
Board members asked what will be posted online about curriculum; staff acknowledged the Curriculum Matters site contains pacing charts and agreed to make navigation easier so parents can locate unit plans and pacing information.
