During the meeting a council member alerted colleagues that Kitsap County is considering a public-safety 0.1% tax and said there are two versions under consideration; one could replace or take the local mental-health tax revenue now collected by Port Orchard.
"If that tax is gonna be collected in Port Orchard, we want it for ourselves and not for Kitsap County to have it," the council member said, urging staff to gather more information about which version the county intends to pursue. The council member said the city could need to act quickly to protect local revenue if the county moves forward with a version that would reallocate funds away from the city.
No formal direction was given; staff were asked to follow up and report back with details so the council can evaluate options.
