Parks director seeks $50,000 to improve Van Zee Park; full ADA playground replacement would cost about $250,000

Parks Director Dennis Ryan asked the finance committee to reallocate an available $50,000 to address immediate safety and access issues at Van Zee Park, including trimming overgrown canopy, removing dead trees and repairing two shelters whose roofs are failing. Ryan said those targeted repairs and lighting would make the park more usable and address unwanted activity in dark, overgrown areas.
Ryan explained that a full ADA-compliant playground replacement is substantially more expensive and not feasible this year: "...that's gonna be a I'm gonna shoot out a $250,000 project to do a ADA accessible playground," he said in the discussion. Council members and staff discussed possibly moving a new play structure nearer to parking and courts to minimize ADA sidewalk costs and noted that a comprehensive parks-plan conversation will help set priorities and funding timing.
Council did not authorize the full playground replacement but expressed support for the staff proposal to deploy the $50,000 for site improvements and directed staff to return with a parks-plan timeline and any formal budget requests for larger capital work.
