Water, sewer and airport projects get grant support; utilities report steady operations

Utility and public-works directors told the council operating expenses for water, wastewater and related departments remained stable despite inflation; they highlighted capital needs that are largely grant-funded. Water Treatment Plant Manager Mike Osborne said the plant's budget rose only about 1% this year and highlighted upcoming conservation outreach materials. "We've actually our total budget's only raised a little over 1%," Osborne said.
Airport and utilities staff described grant awards that reduce the local fiscal burden: a $9.4M wetlands recharge infrastructure grant, $1.8M for State Road 47 septic-to-sewer phase 2 and a $1.7M RIF grant for airport hangar roof repairs; the airport also placed $550,000 for taxiway design and construction in the proposed budget and budgeted $750,000 as local match capacity for future FDOT grants.
