The Palos Heights Zoning Board of Appeals on Feb. 11 unanimously recommended approval of a special-use permit to allow a barbershop at 13405 S. Ridgeland Avenue. Petitioner Ali Karaja told the board he has been a professional barber for about six years, will bring an existing client base to the new location and plans to start with three barbers and six chairs.
Karaja told the board there would be no outdoor activity and no loud music and that the business would comply with applicable codes. As he described the operation, he said it would also sell hair-care products and operate Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The ZBA’s motion — recorded on the docket as DOCKET 2026-UP-01 — was made by Commissioner Robert Starzyk and seconded by Commissioner Jack Shanahan; the board approved the recommendation by a unanimous voice vote. The motion text in the minutes reads: "Recommend approval to allow a barbershop to operate as a special use within the premises located at 13405 S. Ridgeland Avenue, Palos Heights, IL and contained within the following PIN: 24-32-300-039-0000."
The board’s action at this meeting is a recommendation recorded in the ZBA minutes; any final permit, inspections, or business licensing remain subject to subsequent administrative review and required permits by city staff.
