CMAP outlines 18-month North Riverside corridor study; Village to contribute $18,000

The Village of North Riverside Development Committee on March 2 heard a presentation from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) on a proposed North Riverside Corridor Plan, a roughly 18-month study to develop goals and project recommendations for key streets in the village. CMAP senior partner Jourdan Nash and program manager Tony Manno described the project scope and next steps to trustees and staff.
"CMAP is a regional planning agency for Northeastern Illinois and provides technical assistance to local governments through a competitive selection process," Nash said, outlining the agency's role and the study approach. He told the committee that the Village identified 26th Street as the primary corridor and DesPlaines Avenue as the secondary corridor for the study, and that the plan will address safety for vulnerable roadway users, ADA compliance, streetscaping and placemaking, and support for small businesses.
CMAP said the timeline for completing the corridor study is approximately 18 months. Next steps include reviewing site visit findings, initiating community outreach and launching a project website to gather input from residents. The estimate value for the corridor plan was given as about $100,000, with the Village's cost-share set at $18,000.
Village Administrator Scarpiniti described how the study will connect to existing local planning work. "Both the Strategic Plan and Comprehensive Plan will serve as important reference documents," she said, and added that CMAP will meet regularly with Village staff and staff will report progress to the Board through Trustee Bianco's Community Development Report.
Trustees asked clarifying questions during a short Q&A. Trustee Sarro asked how often the Village would receive updates; Nash said the next coordination call will include a more detailed timeline and set deadlines. Trustee Tricoci asked whether information gathered by NIU would be used in the corridor plan; Administrator Scarpiniti said the study will build on previous planning efforts and other collected data.
The committee did not take formal action on the study at the meeting; CMAP and Village staff will continue coordination and return updates to the Board as the project advances.
