The Granite School District board approved, on first reading, the closure of Valley Crest Elementary and a set of feeder-pattern changes intended to relieve overcrowding at Granger High and West Lake Junior. The motion, made by Kris Nguyen and seconded by Connie Burgess, passed unanimously.
The board also approved, as a first reading, a plan to open a Spanish Dual Language Immersion (DLI) magnet at the existing Valley Crest campus. Connie Burgess moved the DLI motion, seconded by Kris Nguyen; it passed unanimously. Board members discussed the short-term busing plan to support families currently enrolled in DLI or STEM tracks and noted that additional busing could be added later at increased cost if necessary.
Board discussion emphasized enrollment pressure at Granger (over capacity) and the district's intention to provide a strong DLI option to serve families in the affected area. Staff indicated short-term busing would be provided to maintain program access while longer-term solutions are considered.
