Sarasota to raise school meal prices as nutrition services face rising costs

Superintendent Terry Connor said Sarasota’s school nutrition program operates as a self-funded department covering 54 cafeterias and that rising costs have forced a difficult decision to increase meal prices. Connor said nutrition leadership has examined cooperatives, contract reviews and other cost-saving strategies to limit the need for price increases but concluded modest increases are necessary to sustain meal quality and staff. He urged families who may qualify for free or reduced-price meals to apply early, and directed listeners to district resources for application instructions.
