Superintendent urges parents to reconnect, volunteer as schools reopen

Terry Connor, superintendent of Sarasota County Schools, urged parents to be intentional about communications and to re-establish routines as the school year begins. "You have to be really intentional about where you're getting your sources of information," Connor said, recommending district apps, websites and school messages as primary sources.
Connor also encouraged parents to volunteer and engage with schools, noting that about 3,000 volunteers supported district schools last year and roughly 500 who dedicated 50 hours or more. "What a great opportunity if our parents could, if they have the ability to do so, to commit... not only just serving 1 or 2 hours in our schools, but could they do more of that?" he said.
The superintendent recommended families speak with their students about their day, practice transportation routes and check school communications for volunteer opportunities and meet-the-teacher events.
