Four elementary schools shift to K–8; Gulf Coast Academy expands tech offerings with USF

Superintendent Terry Connor said the district will convert four schools — Alta Vista, Brandwood, Gulf Gate and Wilkinson — from K–5 to K–8 to increase building utilization and offer families continuity through grade 8. He said the changes respond to declining enrollment and community feedback.
Connor also described the Gulf Coast Academy of Innovation and Technology as a specialized site that will enroll sixth graders into unique programs focused on artificial intelligence, machine learning and cybersecurity. He said the district is partnering with the University of South Florida to shape curriculum and prepare students for future technical careers.
Families and community members were cited as instrumental to the decision to shift grade configurations; Connor said the moves aim to better use existing facilities while expanding educational options.
