APS recognizes dozens of new principals and district leaders ahead of school year

Superintendent Duran Blakey introduced newly appointed principals and district leaders including Raylyn Dooley (Highland High School), Ken Merhaj (Valley High School) and others, and invited honorees to come forward for certificates and a group photograph.
At the start of the Aug. 5 meeting the superintendent recognized a large group of newly appointed principals and district leaders who will serve in the coming school year. Superintendent Duran Blakey listed names and assignments and invited the honorees to the dais to receive certificates and a group photo.
Among the assignments announced: Raylyn Dooley as principal of Highland High School; Ken Merhaj as principal of Valley High School; Gilber Leiva as principal at Atrisco Heritage Academy High School; Kimberly Crabtree as principal of Jackson Middle School; and Renee Salazar Garcia as principal at LBJ Middle School, among others. The superintendent framed the recognitions as welcoming the leaders who will "help shape the future of Albuquerque Public Schools" and emphasized their role in supporting staff and students.
The board and audience applauded; the superintendent thanked staff and encouraged the newcomers as schools prepare to open.
