Salem Lakes staff aims to draft ordinances on large solar, battery storage and related uses within weeks

Concerns about large‑scale solar fields, battery storage and data centers surfaced during the SWOT review after residents identified such projects as threats to the village's rural character. "Some of the big threats that people were really concerned about were solar fields, battery storage, things like that," a committee member said during the meeting.
A staff member told the committee the village plans to prepare draft ordinances on those issues quickly. "We should have draft ordinance by the end of this week, and we're looking to schedule special planning commission meeting immediately followed by a board meeting to get that quickly approved," the staff member said, and added staff anticipates the items could move within about a month. Committee members discussed how local standards—screening, vegetation, setback and possible taxes or incentives—could be used to make development more palatable if it occurs.
