The East Palo Alto City Council read aloud a proclamation recognizing the life and civic contributions of Rosemary Steele and approved the measure by voice vote.
Mayor Lopez opened the item with a biographical reading of Steele’s work, noting that she “dedicated 35 years of her career to opportunities in job training” and that she “profoundly impacted over 800 lives through efforts in job placement and workforce development.” Council members who knew Steele from local programs and church outreach spoke about her decades-long service and urged the city to find ways to deliver honors while community members are still living. Councilmember (speaker 3) urged a program to give people “their flowers while they’re yet alive,” a point the mayor agreed with.
The motion to adopt the proclamation was moved and seconded and approved on a voice vote. The council also closed a brief public-comment period that included no additional remarks on the proclamation.
