Commissioners authorize inquiry on insurance options for proposed ALPR pole attachments

Sheriff Todd Brackett outlined the county's Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system — cameras purchased but not yet mounted — and named two potential installation sites: Route 1 at Route 27 in Wiscasset and Route 32 at Route 17 in Jefferson. He said the ALPR captures license plate images without storing car descriptions or histories, that the data "is proprietary, stays in the County for 90 days before it is destroyed and can only be accessed under Maine law with probable cause," and that CMP requires a $5 million general liability policy for pole attachments.
The commission authorized the sheriff and county administrator to discuss insurance options with the MCCA Risk Pool so the county can determine the cost to extend coverage to meet CMP requirements. The sheriff said he hoped some costs could be covered by grant funds but that the county needed an insurance-cost estimate before applying for or accepting grant funding.
