Mobile mayor says city will apply for DOJ grant to expand homeless outreach

Mayor Cherickatos said the city will apply for a U.S. Department of Justice grant to expand its homeless outreach team, a move he said would allow the city to add staff to connect people experiencing homelessness with services and free up police officers for other duties. "This grant would allow us to hire new personnel, to help the city's unhoused population and hopefully free up mobile police officers so they can perform their other duties," the mayor said.
The mayor also celebrated Mobile's ties to the Coast Guard, gave an update on improvements at Tricentennial Park and recognized National Health Center Week with proclamations for local community health partners. The grant appears on the consent docket as authorization for the mayor to apply, accept and receive a DOJ COPS micro grant of $200,000 with no city match required, according to the consent packet.
