Committee moves to prioritize agenda-preparation and backup-documentation changes after AG guidance

The North Kingstown School Committee voted to move discussion of agenda preparation and backup documentation to the top of its special meeting and spent the bulk of the session examining how to make agenda items understandable to the public. Legal counsel summarized recent Attorney General guidance and a South Kingstown decision, saying the office's primary concern is the clarity of the advertised agenda: "Their sole concern is what's advertised in the agenda and that a member of the public can clearly understand, what's going to be discussed at the meeting," the counsel said.
Committee members and administrators discussed operational fixes including adding a field to the agenda-request form that asks how the item should be titled on the public agenda, sharing draft agendas earlier in the week, creating a calendar of recurring items to reduce last-minute requests, and enforcing 14-day (vote) and 7-day (discussion) timelines for materials. The committee agreed to continue the conversation and have members and staff review proposed form edits ahead of the August 18 meeting.
