Student YETI group urges AI literacy, shares survey showing student concerns about critical thinking and environmental impact

Members of the Youth Empowerment Through Technology and Innovation (YETI) group told the Santa Cruz County Board of Education they piloted an MIT‑designed AI curriculum, surveyed county students about AI, and began drafting recommendations for AI literacy and an AI 'bill of rights' for schools.
Student presenter Joe McGinty and others said the survey found broad student concern about AI’s effect on critical thinking and environmental impacts; YETI plans to continue data collection, develop recommended AI literacy standards and advance pilot guidelines for districts. The students reported outreach activities including a panel for AAUW, field visits to Google and Common Sense Media, and that three students were invited to join a San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District AI task force.
Trustee Larson and others asked for links to op‑eds and Sentinel coverage and praised the student work; student trustees raised environmental concerns tied to AI projects and suggested continued cooperation with Youth for Environmental Action.
