Board proposes modest fee increases and bifurcated admission-on-motion fee

Eric Lorenz told the committee that fee increases proposed under 24-18 reflect rising costs to administer admissions and that the board aimed to keep increases below CPI for the period since the last changes. "The fees have not been changed for have not been increased since, 2014 for the bar exam fees and since at least 2004 for the character and fitness registration fee," Lorenz said.
Lorenz described a proposed bifurcated fee for admission on motion (Rule 705) to capture some administrative costs at an earlier stage when applicants file preliminary questionnaires. The board said staff currently spend substantial time reviewing preliminary questionnaires without a fee to offset that work; the bifurcated approach would recoup administrative costs while not increasing the overall cost to the applicant in the board's view.
