The Planning Commission approved two separate motions related to the Animated Sign Overlay Zone.
First, the commission approved the zoning text amendment motion with a modification: staff was directed to present an alternative approach for handling the 10‑year sunset that would allow property owners who maintain signs in good order to apply for retention or extension. The motion was moved by Commissioner Trakchan and seconded by Commissioner Nazarian, and the roll call returned unanimous 'Yes' votes.
Second, the commission approved the map amendment motion (the proposed ANSOZ boundary reductions that exclude DSP downtown properties and the ASOZ areas and include C‑3 properties along South Central and CA properties on Brand Boulevard). That motion also passed on a unanimous roll call.
Both recommendations will be transmitted to City Council; staff will prepare materials presenting alternative sunset treatment options.
