Sunset Point resident asks Rowan County to seek no-wake zone on High Rock Lake inlet

A Sunset Point resident told the Rowan County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 3 that increasing development and new docks on a narrow inlet of High Rock Lake have created safety hazards and asked the county to help file for a no-wake zone.
"It's probably, I don't know, maybe a 100 or 200 yards long, very narrow, maybe a 150 feet. And there's people that always come speeding in and out, and, we're concerned about safety at this point because with all the new docks, young kids, there are people out there swimming, and they haven't changed their ways," said Bruce, a resident of 1021 Sunset Point. He told the board that state wildlife staff advised residents to work through the county to submit a request.
The chair asked Bruce to leave his contact information and said county staff and the board clerk would follow up, adding the county's legal team would help assemble the documentation. The assistant county attorney cautioned the board that previous similar requests have proven more complex than simply passing a local resolution and that additional steps might be necessary before the county can forward a formal petition to the state agency.
The board did not take a formal vote on the matter during the meeting; the chair said staff will gather details from residents and return with the necessary paperwork and next steps.
