Council approves new flat-rate building permit fees, waives fees for qualifying seniors

The City Council voted unanimously to amend Chapter 11 of the Chicago Heights Code of Ordinances to simplify building permit fees. Economic Development Director Jack Hynes told the council the change sets a residential fee at 1% of project cost and a commercial fee at 1.5% of project cost and allows fee waivers for qualifying residents age 65 and older.
“Residential fee was set at 1% of the project cost and commercial fee was set at 1.5% of the project cost,” Hynes said. Council discussion preceded the vote but no amendment to the proposal was recorded; the ordinance passed with all present voting aye (Alderman Kelli Merrick absent).
