Michiana council approves HONK parking program for non-residents

The Village of Michiana council voted April 11 to adopt HONK Parking Operations for non-resident parking, setting the rate at $10 per hour and authorizing the vendor to handle transactions.
John Cherewko of HONK presented the system to the council, describing a QR-code, no-app workflow that accepts Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal and allows the village to customize hours and rates. The council discussed using the tool for event parking and agreed it could be turned off for village events. Council members noted HONK charges a 2.9% credit-card transaction fee and that "the cost to the Village would be $50 a month for the service." Tim McCarthy moved to implement HONK for non-residents only; Brian Cassidy seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
