Board authorizes maintenance-grant application for CHS/CMS chiller and boiler project

The Carlinville school board voted 5-0 Nov. 10 to authorize a maintenance-grant application to support repair or replacement of the high school and middle-school chiller and boiler. The motion, made by Seth Roberts and seconded by Andrew Johnson, passed on a roll call vote.
Dr. Becky Schuchman told the board the district could apply for up to $50,000 from the state but must match that amount locally. "We can apply for a maintenance grant through the state and if we qualify we could receive up to $50,000 which we have to match with $50,000," she said. She added the chiller and boiler project would likely require an investment of more than $100,000.
The board set the grant-application deadline (Jan. 15, 2026) and authorized district staff to file the application. If awarded, the grant would reduce the district’s local share of HVAC project costs but would not cover the full projected cost.
Next steps: staff will prepare and submit the grant application and report back to the board with application materials and matching-fund plans.
