Michiana council narrows oak pruning window, requires sanitation and wound paint
Summary
Councilmembers approved an amendment to the village tree ordinance prohibiting pruning of oak trees from April 15 to Sept. 15 and requiring tool sanitation and application of latex‑based paint to pruning wounds.
The Village of Michiana amended its tree ordinance to restrict pruning of oak trees during the prime oak‑wilt risk period.
Nancy Thill moved to amend the ordinance to specify that "trees identified as oak will not be pruned between April 15th and September 15th" and that, if pruning is necessary, tools must be sanitized and a latex‑based paint applied to the wound immediately after pruning. Brian Cassidy seconded; the motion passed by roll call (5–0).
Separately, the Tree Board reported a recent application of herbicide by contractor Pizzo on Oct. 2 and said a proposed butterfly/native plant garden will be considered at the December meeting pending a presentation by Pizzo Gardens.
