Michiana council hires Southwest Michigan Planning Commission to update master plan

The Village of Michiana council voted to hire the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission (SWMPC) to lead a 15‑month update of the village master plan.
Councilmember Mike Botelho moved to approve SWMPC’s recommendation at a cost of $16,591, not to exceed $20,000; Brian Cassidy seconded and the motion passed by roll call (5–0). Planning Commission member Julie Bonello outlined a six‑phase workplan that includes project organization, community inventory and analysis, public engagement, goals and future land‑use drafting, implementation steps and draft review.
Bonello said the Planning Commission interviewed five firms and recommended SWMPC. The Planning Commission will include questions about a possible police station modernization in upcoming resident surveys, which are scheduled to begin in January as part of the engagement phase.
