Police ask residents for help after 11–12 trees cut on village beach property

Police Chief Ryan Layman told the Village of Michiana council that vandals cut down "11 or 12 trees" on village property near Stop 40 and that he had issued an alert asking residents to come forward with information.
Layman reported 44 police calls combined with Grand Beach and said the vandalism occurred Friday early afternoon. Council members asked that the village notify the arborist to appraise the trees, alert the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) because the trees are in the critical dune area, and inform Chikaming Open Lands since the property is in a land trust. The council urged residents to contact the police if they saw or heard anything related to the incident.
No suspects or arrests were reported during the meeting; the matter remains under investigation. The council did not vote on additional actions during the meeting but requested follow-up appraisals and interagency notifications.
