Pingree Grove board authorizes police to buy stop-stick pursuit prevention devices

The Pingree Grove Village Board approved the purchase of nine stop-stick tire deflation and pursuit prevention devices (including two training units) for police use.
Police Chief (the chief) told trustees the devices are lightweight, easily deployed and have been adopted by neighboring agencies and recommended by risk-management organizations. "They're called stop sticks," the chief said, adding the unit price in the packet would outfit patrol vehicles and that manufacturer guidance suggests replacement after about five years if mounted in trunk areas and exposed to weather. The motion at the meeting authorized the purchase "in the amount of $5,789," and trustees approved it by roll call.
Trustees asked practical questions about lifespan and inspections; the chief said units are inspected with vehicle inspections and that spike elements can be replaced at low cost after use. The chief also said surrounding agencies' experience suggested the devices have reduced dangerous pursuits or assisted in apprehensions, and training will be scheduled annually for officers.
