On athletic fields, Shelton said the Board Facilities Subcommittee asked staff to convene district and city representatives to explore options including additional temporary or permanent athletic fields, a regenerative grass pilot at Franklin, and a moratorium on new elementary turf while the district studies alternatives. “We appreciate the thoughtful discussion on this topic,” he said, adding that the district will deliberate in June and engage experts and community partners before making binding decisions.
The announcement came amid strong public comment urging a pause on new turf installations at TK and elementary sites and requests for independent testing of field materials; Shelton acknowledged community concerns and said staff will bring a detailed item back to the board.
