Council approves park irrigation, regrading and hydroseed work capped at $40,000

The Village of Michiana council on Sept. 6 approved work to install irrigation, regrade and hydroseed the park lawn, amending an initial motion to cap total spending at $40,000.
Council member Mike Mumper told the council contractors were lined up and that timing is important due to weather. He proposed accepting two bids—Down to Earth for $19,000 and Serviscape for $20,260—and amended his motion so the village would not exceed $40,000 in total. The motion passed on a roll-call vote of 5 ayes, 0 nays.
Mumper said an anonymous resident pledged a substantial donation toward the project and that capital improvements funding will be used to complete the work. The council directed that the seeded area be fenced off and remain closed until spring to allow grass to establish; playground and pickleball court access will be maintained with adjusted entry points.
The vote followed a brief discussion of plantings along the creek, where Tree Board member Nancy Thill has worked with a resident to naturalize the area to attract pollinators. The Tree Board previously scheduled new trees to be planted in the park on Sept. 24.
