Teaching and Learning director reports higher family engagement, ELL counts and fewer suspensions

Director of Teaching and Learning Dr. Antoinette Gray reported several operational updates during the Sept. 15 meeting. She said the district held its first round of Family Advisory Committee meetings on Sept. 9 and 10 with slightly increased attendance; the district is supporting English Learners with translators and noted that Ms. Wek now serves 22 ELL students at Barack Obama and 2 at JWLA.
Dr. Gray also described instructional challenges arising from the merger of NWEA and HMH assessments and told the board teams are working to maintain continuity. On student discipline she reported a decline in suspensions among Jesse White students from 31 last year to 15 this year, attributing the change to increased family partnership with support services.
