Veterans Service Office highlights heavy caseloads and requests staff expansion, including a female VSO

The Veterans Service Office told the committee that the work required to prepare and pursue claims ranges from simple discharge claims to complex appeals that need FOIA, translations and Board of Veterans' Appeals research — work that can demand repeated contacts and sustained staff time.
County leaders said they have discussed adding staff. One committee member said they believe hiring a female VSO is warranted to better serve women veterans who may prefer a female representative: “I think that we really need a female VSO to help out some of the female veterans and stuff that maybe don't want to or can't talk to a male,” the member said. Staff noted the request will be factored into the ongoing budget process.
The VSO described accreditation standards for representatives, the variety of benefits handled (disability compensation, pension/aid-and-attendance, DIC, burial benefits, discharge upgrades) and the role of the county office in preparing veterans for exams and appeals. Committee members expressed support and said budget decisions will be addressed during the normal budget cycle.
