County staff, assessors to contact veterans ahead of exemption hearing to update records

Committee members were told assessors across Saratoga County will proactively contact veterans in their files to request updated documentation if the local exemption moves forward.
A staff member explained assessors “are going to reach out to all of the veterans they have in their files currently and request all new paperwork.” The outreach is intended to give assessors time to verify eligibility and avoid retroactive changes to tax rolls; staff said acting sooner would prevent effects on 2028 taxes.
Director Frank McClements described how veterans obtain evidence of benefits: the Department of Veterans Affairs typically mails benefit-certification letters in December, and veterans can also print the letter from va.gov or request that the VA resend it. “If they're clients of our office and we're able to access their VA record, we also can write a benefit certification letter on our letterhead,” McClements said.
County staff said outreach will include step-by-step instructions for veterans to provide required paperwork and that assessors will use the time to update records in advance of any local adoption decision.
