Staff report: $823,511 paid in June for workers' compensation; settlements produced roughly $320,000 savings

Gary, a staff member, told the committee that "there were a total claim total claims paid in the amount of $823,511." He said two settlements accounted for most of that amount and produced "an overall savings of approximately $320,000," leaving true claims paid outside those settlements at about $268,511.
Gary reported 24 new claims in June (two were record-only) for a total of 171 open claims. He contrasted the current budget pace with 2025, saying the county has expensed 64% of its workers' compensation budget year to date compared with 48% at the same point in 2025. He also described use of the county's 24/7 nurse line, saying "out of the 24 new claims, 12 did call and 12 didn't, 2 of which were needing emergency care."
Gary provided additional settlement details, including items arising from so-called "15-8 files," saying "we received 4,200,000 for 31 claims," and that one claimant has three claims under those files. He said recent settlements produced an estimated $140,000 in savings associated with those files. He also reported on Maplewood Manor, stating there were 37 claims there, with 32 closed and five remaining open at an estimated cost of about $4,000 per month.
The committee asked no substantive follow-up questions during this report. The chair moved on to the next agenda item after the presentation.
