Board tables appointment of Judy Brown as secretary after public criticism and requests for vetting

Public concern about a proposed appointment dominated the June 24 special meeting when several speakers urged trustees to review materials before voting on a board secretary hire. "Now she's being considered for the role of board secretary, and I believe it is important board that the has some facts before casting a vote," said David Upshaw, who said he would distribute documents and urged trustees to 'do your homework.' Trustee Shyrl Griffin, a sitting member, said she had formally requested Judy Brown's résumé and asked for transparency about board attorney pay.
Rather than approve the hire, the board voted to table the item. "Mr. Patterson made a motion to table the Approval of Judy Brown as Board Secretary for $850 a month until the next board meeting on July 22, 2025," the minutes record. The tabling motion carried on a voice vote with Trustees Hannah, Myrick, Dawson, Johnson and Patterson voting aye; Trustees Buchanan and Griffin were absent for the vote. The board did not discuss further public allegations during open session and directed the item be reconsidered at the July meeting.
