Planning commission votes to forward ADU definition changes to city council
Summary
Commissioners voted to forward amendments aligning code references ("accessory apartment" to "accessory dwelling unit") in chapters 19, 21 and 22 to the City Council. Staff said the edits are definitional and do not change substance of the code.
At the regular meeting the commission held a public hearing and considered a text amendment to align references across Orem City Code so the newly proposed section 22-6-11 (Accessory Dwelling Units) is used consistently instead of the older term "accessory apartment." Jared (city planning staff) described the package as mainly a set of definitional and cross-reference cleanups across the traffic, water and zoning chapters; he said the changes do not alter substantive policy allowances in the planned development sections.
No members of the public spoke during the hearing. After discussion and a short redline correction noted by commissioners (a few instances where the word "accessory" was inadvertently removed in the draft), the commission voted to forward a recommendation of approval to the City Council. Jared summarized the staff position: "We haven't changed any of the substance of these PD zones... it's just the term," and commissioners asked staff to fix small drafting omissions before the redline goes to council.
