Resident reports tear-gas exposure during training; commissioners seek incident report

A Springfield resident told the Board of Clark County Commissioners on April 29 that a tear-gas training exercise at the Rebert Pike facility exposed a child and an adult in an adjacent field.
Sheriff Chris Clark said Springfield Police hosted the certification training and that Clark County officers were present but not the training host. He said the police department is addressing the complaint and that officials are reviewing how it occurred and measures to prevent future exposure. Jim Coyne, who said he and his son were affected while picking flowers, asked the county to request a copy of the incident report and any written policies governing such trainings and to consider notification procedures for neighbors and atmospheric-condition safeguards.
Commissioners said they do not want chemicals affecting residents and asked Sheriff Clark clarifying questions. The county will request documentation of the incident and examine whether policy or coordination changes are needed for exercises near populated areas.
