BLM issues three free‑use gravel permits to help Elko County reduce haul costs

Brady Eldens told the commission the BLM has issued three free‑use permits to the Elko County Highway Department to extract gravel for county roads, a change Eldens described as "low key" but important for reducing haul and materials costs.
"For the 1st time in a long time, we've actually issued 3 free use permits to Elko County Highway Department for use in extracting gravel for county roads," Eldens said. He said the permits add multiple material sources so the county can mitigate haul costs and avoid a single‑pit dependency.
Eldens explained the permits rely on existing disturbances and that BLM staff will continue to identify pits of acceptable grade, prioritizing pits south of the interstate where community pits and small permits are more feasible. Commissioners asked whether the pits were existing disturbances and Eldens confirmed they were, and said BLM will add suitable sites to a list for county use.
