Work session hears offers of community programming, gets departmental updates on parks, water and animal control

Robert Sumner, who said he lives on Lafayette Road and oversees training at the NSA compound, told commissioners Jan. 27 he plans to run charity events and offered to coordinate no-cost community programs and support for county needs. The board heard the offer during the public‑comment portion of the work session.
Department updates followed. Mordie Askew reported the county is in the middle of basketball season and preparing for baseball while seeking umpires and a recreation staff hire. Samantha Hedgecoke provided permit and code-enforcement updates and noted partnership on a spring festival. County staff reported that a repair at well #4 appears to have fixed a prior problem and that hydrant raises and new hires have occurred in the utilities division. Staff also noted an increase in stray dogs and indicated animal-control crews are pursuing an animal with an object on its head; two public‑works promotions (Toby to mechanic, Wes to foreman) were also announced.
