Fire chief reports 10,000 acres of fuels mitigation, staffing updates and insurance concerns

Fire Chief Matt Peterson told the board that the district's first batch of seasonal staff had begun critical training ahead of the fire season and that most volunteer departments completed wildland refresher training. "Our fuels mitigation, we have about 10,000 acres of planned treatments within the greater Elko area as well as Jackpot right now," Peterson said, and staff described completed and upcoming mitigation projects near Wells and Moore Summit.
The chief also reported continued project work with NV Energy and anticipated assistance-to-firefighters (AFG) grant opportunities. Commissioners raised wider concerns about homeowners' insurance availability and local water-infrastructure issues affecting certificates of occupancy in Spring Creek. The Chair and staff said they are engaging state insurance officials and natural-resources directors to pursue unified data and mitigation mapping to help insurance and mitigation planning. Commissioner (speaker 2) and Chief Peterson discussed evolving tactics and volunteer capacity for structure response in rural areas and the district's efforts to standardize training and shared equipment agreements.
