Board adopts emergency/on-call firefighter pay policy to formalize seasonal deployments

The Elko County Fire Protection District will adopt a new policy to formalize use and pay for seasonal emergency firefighters (EFFs) and on-call personnel. Staff told the board the policy clarifies activation, onboarding and pay classifications so payroll and reimbursement processing are consistent while aligning with commonly used federal administrative rates; the board approved F1 by voice vote with no fiscal impact to the budget.
Chief Matt Peterson and staff said the district has been operating similarly in practice but lacked an adopted local policy. "We align these with federal policies ... so we're not reinventing the wheel," staff said during the discussion. The policy will allow the district to pay personnel based on their highest verified qualification for purposes of hiring and reimbursement and is intended to reduce billing complications associated with changing pay rates during activations.
