County manager: budget reduced but insurance spike leaves contingency; final adoption expected

County Manager Thomas Weaver told the commission during May budget hearings that work to trim spending reduced an earlier shortfall but insurance changes have kept the budget closely balanced.
“We have overall reduced the budget, to the part where we have a deficit of 21,830.00,” Weaver said at the May 6 public hearing. On May 27 he reported improved figures after new insurance information and said, “we are now at a 59,000.00 contingency.” The manager said updated handouts were distributed to commissioners and that he expects final adjustments before a formal adoption vote.
Weaver highlighted that 2020 SPLOST and the current 2025 SPLOST will cover several capital items — including truck replacements and courthouse projects — and that department budgets largely held steady or declined. Chairman Charles Coffey asked staff to double‑check public safety figures that appeared inconsistent in the packet.
No members of the public spoke at either budget hearing. Weaver also said he had met with constitutional officers, including the sheriff, and that a possible vehicle trade — the sheriff’s Black F‑150 — could help the public works fleet if the sheriff agrees.
