Commission adopts elections board ordinance required by state law; county to appoint members
Summary

The commission voted unanimously on Nov. 12 to adopt an ordinance creating the Cusseta–Chattahoochee County Board of Elections and Registration, implementing O.C.G.A. § 21-2-40.1 and complying with HB 581’s timeline for counties whose probate judges previously served as election superintendents.
County Manager Thomas Weaver told commissioners earlier in the meeting that "HB 581 did pass, [the] County is automatically enrolled," and that the governing authority may opt out later if it chooses. The ordinance (first and second readings are included in meeting materials) establishes a three-member board of electors appointed by the Board of Commissioners, staggered initial terms and an elections supervisor position administered as a county employee.
At the Nov. 25 work session, staff recommended three names to bring forward: Nancy Hoard, Valerie Lassiter and Crystal Walker. County documents indicate appointments must be in place before Jan. 1, 2025, to transfer duties from the probate court to the new board. A member of the public, Queen Spivey, asked about voter-roll maintenance; staff said purging for deceased electors is handled routinely by county staff.
