The Elko Television District board voted unanimously to enter an agreement with the Nevada Seismological Laboratory to install mountaintop fire-watch cameras at ETVD-managed towers including Grindstone and Peavey Hill.
Will Hanyas of the UNR Seismology Laboratory told the board the system will expand by roughly 30 cameras across Nevada this year and that “these cameras are viewable by the public” via AlertWildfire and AlertWest. He said typical power draw per site is small (36–42 watts) and the equipment occupies about 4U of rack space, with options for AC or DC power depending on site constraints.
Board members and staff discussed possible public-access options (a still image every ~10 seconds versus continuous live feeds) and technical coordination with local partners. Chair moved to authorize entering the agreement and to give the communications-systems manager authority to approve future site requests following infrastructure-committee review; the motion carried unanimously.
The district emphasized the arrangement will be provided at no charge to UNR for the initial installations, leverage bandwidth donated by the Nevada System of Higher Education, and align with existing cooperative agreements with the local fire district. Will said UNR will follow up with technical specifics and feed-access options for ETVD to review.
