Winfield School District 34 trustees received a spring assessment report showing above-average math performance and generally positive reading growth. The presentation said 29% of students are in the top 10% for math achievement and 52% are in the top quartile; second and fourth grades were highlighted as performing above grade level, and the elevated math program will add another class next year.
Reading results were characterized as "high-growth, high-achievement overall," with primary grades performing well above average and middle school reading targets met by about 65% of students. The district noted a slight decline in fourth-grade reading that staff will monitor. Attendance reporting enhancements showed the district's overall chronic absenteeism dropped to 8.459% — the lowest rate since before the COVID-19 pandemic — while Pre-K and Kindergarten recorded higher chronic absenteeism rates. Middle-school tardies increased but a later homeroom start reportedly reduced instructional disruption.
District materials tied improvements to instructional changes, updated resources and teacher efforts; staff said only about 8% of students fall in the bottom quartile for both achievement and growth. The board discussed monitoring outlier grades and supporting middle-school behavior and attendance interventions.
