Residents urge Winfield SD 34 to drop appeal of Town Center TIF ruling

Edith Makra told the board, "I was so relieved when the court settled the TIF lawsuit. I am in favor of a town center redevelopment and believe this will help Winfield grow and serve all residents. I am sickened to learn the Dist 34 wants to appeal. Give it up! Move on! And work with the Village and the constituents you serve to build this community. Don't give our tax dollars to lawyers. Spend it on the kids."
Lauren Thurman, who identified herself as a teacher, said she cannot afford higher taxes and asked the district to stop spending on litigation and prioritize community needs such as a new police station. James Thelen noted that "the Court has ruled" and called the appeal an "unconscionable use of tax dollars," while Brian Clausen said village election results show voters support proceeding with development and asked the district to cease blocking it.
The board did not take action on the comments during the meeting. Public comment on the TIF appeal was recorded early in the session and speakers urged the district to coordinate with the village rather than pursue additional litigation.
